How to read your Tuff Torq tag

There's a white barcode label on the back of the transaxle, on the pulley side. Some tractors, John Deere among them, repeat it on a sticker under the seat. It carries three numbers.

  1. Top left: the Tuff Torq part number. 11 characters, e.g. 7A646084181. It identifies the complete unit, so order a replacement by this number.
  2. Top right: the serial number. Repair kits and internal parts are chosen by serial, because Tuff Torq changed internals within the same model code.
  3. Bottom right: the OEM part number (John Deere AM/MIA, Husqvarna 532…, MTD/Cub Cadet 618-…). If the top numbers are unreadable, this one gets us there too.

Don't rely on the owner's manual alone: Tuff Torq warns manuals can be misprinted. No tag at all? Your tractor's parts manual lists the transaxle under the OEM number, and our finder accepts the tractor model as a last resort.

Which Tuff Torq transaxle do I have?

Read the white barcode tag on the back of the unit. The 11-character number top left (e.g. 7A646084181) is the one to order by, and the model code (K46BT, K58…) tells you the series. Our part number guide has photos and tips.

Can I swap a K46 for a different model?

Generally no. Tuff Torq's guidance is to replace with the same model. Even within the K46 family, a K46BT doesn't replace a K46AC: axle length, pulley, control arm and brake linkage differ. The exception is a supersession, where Tuff Torq updates the part number for the same unit.

Should I rebuild my transaxle or replace it?

A repair or seal kit chosen by your serial number can fix leaks and lost drive on a unit that's otherwise sound. A cracked case, damaged gears or a unit that's been run dry usually makes a complete prefilled transaxle the better buy. See the K46 rebuild guide.

What fluid does a Tuff Torq transaxle use?

Tuff Torq specifies its Tuff Tech fluid for many units. The right oil and capacity depend on the model. See the K46 oil change guide, or send us your part number and we'll confirm.
