How to Rebuild a Tuff Torq K46 with a Repair Kit (K46, K57, T40)

A Tuff Torq repair kit rebuilds the hydraulic heart of a K46, K57, K574 or T40 transaxle for roughly 55–65% of the cost of a new prefilled unit. It's a bench job: plan on a weekend, a clean workspace and fresh Tuff Tech fluid. This guide summarizes Tuff Torq's own service tips for its repair kits. It's an outline, not a full shop manual, and Tuff Torq recommends a qualified technician for repairs.

Kit or new unit?

The tractor slows or stalls on hills once warm, but the oil is clean The oil is dark or full of metal flakes
Hours are moderate and the gears are quiet It whines or grinds under load (gear or differential damage)
You're comfortable with a bench teardown You want it running this afternoon: new units come prefilled

Step 1: Get the right kit (by serial number)

Tuff Torq changed internals within the same model code, so kits are matched by the serial number on the white barcode label, not just the model. Clean the unit and read the label before ordering. Popular K46 kits: 1A646098450 (K46BE, BT, CA, CB, CC, CR, DS and T40J), 1A646098400 (K46BR, K46DM), 1A646098440 (K46AC, K46V) and 1A646099581 (K46C, AA, AM, AU, HD). K57Z uses 1A646098151-Z. See the full chart on the K46 hub.

What's in a kit

Typically the center case, pump cylinder block, motor cylinder block, filter, O-rings, seals and sealant. You may not need every O-ring and seal in the bag.

Step 2: Remove and drain

  1. Inspect the new parts when they arrive. The mating surfaces must be smooth and clean.
  2. Drain the oil through the port under the black rubber cap below the fan, and don't reuse it. You don't need to remove the vent valve.
  3. Set the unit on the bench with the fan facing down.

Step 3: Open, clean and inspect

  1. Remove the case bolts and lift off the lower housing.
  2. Scrape all old sealant from both case halves without gouging the sealing faces.
  3. Pull the exploded diagram and parts list for your serial number so you can identify every part.
  4. Clean and flush everything. Brake cleaner works on internal parts. Poor cleaning is the top cause of early failure after a rebuild and can void the parts warranty.
  5. Anything you remove goes back in the same orientation. For example, the thrust plate with the smaller inside diameter faces the pistons.
  6. Note the original position of the motor housing before removing it. Installing it 180° out gives reversed or one-way drive.

Step 4: Reassemble

  1. Coat the mating surfaces with clean oil.
  2. Transfer the bypass pin and washer from the old center case and motor block. A dab of grease holds them in place.
  3. If your unit has IDS valves, match the position of the ball or filter to the diagram. New center cases have pilot holes for IDS; non-IDS units don't use them.
  4. Apply fresh sealant, close the case and torque the bolts to spec.
  5. Refill with Tuff Tech fluid (187Q0899000) and purge the air. See our oil change and purge guide.
