K46: repair it or replace it?
Most K46 complaints come down to one of four things. Match yours and you'll know whether you're shopping for a kit or a unit.

Rule of thumb: a repair kit costs about 55–65% of a new prefilled unit, takes a weekend, and needs clean internals to succeed. A new unit bolts on in an afternoon and comes with fresh Tuff Tech fluid. If you're not sure, send us the serial and a description; we'll tell you straight.

How to read your Tuff Torq tag
There's a white barcode label on the back of the transaxle (some tractors repeat it under the seat). It carries three numbers:
- Top left: the Tuff Torq part number. 11 characters, e.g. 7A646084181. This identifies the complete unit. Order a replacement by this number.
- Top right: the serial number. Repair kits and internal parts are chosen by serial, because Tuff Torq changed internals within the same model code.
- Bottom right: the OEM part number (John Deere AM/MIA, Husqvarna 5324xxxxx, MTD/Cub Cadet 618-xxxxx). If the top numbers are unreadable, this one gets us there too.
No tag at all? Your tractor's parts manual lists the transaxle under the OEM number, and our finder accepts the tractor model as a last resort.

Can I upgrade a K46 to a K57, K58 or K66? Not as a bolt-in. Mounting points, axle length, control geometry and the fan/pulley stack differ, and the heavier units need a frame designed for them. Some tractor models were sold with either a K46 or a K58 depending on trim; in that case the K58 version of your tractor's parts list tells you what else changes. Ask us before buying.
Are K46 model codes interchangeable? No. K46AW, K46BT, K46DM and the rest differ in control arm orientation, brake side, axle length, input pulley and oil reservoir type. Order the exact part number from your tag.

Is the Tuff Torq K46 a good transmission?
For what it's built for, yes: it's the most-produced hydrostatic transaxle in the world and most of them outlive the tractor. It's a light-duty unit, though. Hills, towing, heavy operators and never changing the oil are what kill it. Keep it under its rating and it lasts; push it and you'll be here shopping for a kit.
Which Tuff Torq transaxle fits my John Deere, Husqvarna, Craftsman or Cub Cadet?

How long does a K46 last?
Typically 500 to 1,000 hours in normal lawn-tractor use, which is 10 to 20 years for most homeowners. Units used on slopes or for hauling can wear out in a few hundred hours.
What are the common K46 problems?
Losing power when hot (worn pump/motor blocks), weak on hills, whining from a low-oil differential, and axle seal leaks. The first two are repair-kit jobs if caught early; gear noise usually means a new unit.
What oil does a K46 take?
Tuff Torq Tuff Tech hydrostatic drive fluid (part 187Q0899000, 3 L bottle). An internal-reservoir K46 holds about 2.2 L. Some owners use a synthetic 5W-50 engine oil; Tuff Torq's own guidance is Tuff Tech, and in most cases a quality synthetic is acceptable, but never ATF.
Can I buy a K46 for a John Deere, Husqvarna or Cub Cadet here?
Yes. The K46 in your tractor is a Tuff Torq part regardless of the badge on the hood; the OEM just assigns its own number. Give us the OEM number (AM132707, 532448354, 618-07207 and so on) or the Tuff Torq number from the tag and we'll match it.
