K58: repair it or replace it?

Hydrostatic K58 problems come in a few patterns. Match yours to decide between a repair kit, a seal kit or a new unit.

What it's doingWhat's usually wrongKit or unit?
Fine when cold, weak or stalls on hills once warmWorn pump/motor blocks or center case, or old, thin oilRepair kit if the oil is clean and hours are moderate; new unit if the oil is dark or has metal in it
Won't move, engine runs fineBypass/tow valve left open, broken belt or pulley, or a failed internal partCheck the bypass lever and belt first. Internal failure usually means a new unit
Whining or grinding under loadGear or differential damage, often from running low on oilNew unit. Gear damage spreads metal through the whole unit
Oil leaking at the axles or input shaftWorn axle or input-shaft seals, or a leaking case jointSeal kit if caught early; top up the oil and listen for gear noise
Creeps in neutral or won't return to neutralControl arm / return mechanism out of adjustment or worn springsAdjust neutral first; replace return springs or arm if worn

Not sure? Send us the model, the 11-digit part number from the label and what it's doing. We'll tell you honestly whether a kit will fix it, usually the same business day. Ask through the Part Finder.

Complete K58 transaxles

Match the model code and part number on your transaxle's white barcode tag. Model codes are not interchangeable (a K46BT does not replace a K46AC). Prefilled units ship with Tuff Tech fluid already in them.

Don't see your number? We stock the full Tuff Torq line through our distributor. Send us the numbers off your tag and we'll quote the exact unit, usually within the hour.

K58 repair kits & components

Kits are matched by model and serial number (Tuff Torq changed internals within the same model code). Model letters below come from Tuff Torq's kit names. When in doubt, send us the label and we'll confirm.

How to read your Tuff Torq tag

There's a white barcode label on the back of the transaxle (some tractors repeat it under the seat). It carries three numbers:

  1. Top left: the Tuff Torq part number. 11 characters, e.g. 7A646084181. This identifies the complete unit. Order a replacement by this number.
  2. Top right: the serial number. Repair kits and internal parts are chosen by serial, because Tuff Torq changed internals within the same model code.
  3. Bottom right: the OEM part number (John Deere AM/MIA, Husqvarna 5324xxxxx, MTD/Cub Cadet 618-xxxxx). If the top numbers are unreadable, this one gets us there too.

No tag at all? Your tractor's parts manual lists the transaxle under the OEM number, and our finder accepts the tractor model as a last resort.

K58 questions we get every week

My tractor says John Deere / Husqvarna / Cub Cadet, not Tuff Torq. Is this the right place?

Yes. The K58 in your machine is made by Tuff Torq; the mower brand just gives it its own part number. Send us that OEM number or the Tuff Torq number from the transaxle's ID label and we'll match it.

Which Tuff Torq transaxle fits my John Deere, Husqvarna, Craftsman or Cub Cadet?

Look up your mower by brand and model: John Deere · Husqvarna & Craftsman · Cub Cadet, MTD & Troy-Bilt · Simplicity, Snapper & Massey Ferguson · Dixie Chopper, Toro & Exmark. Each table shows the Tuff Torq unit your model uses and the OEM number it replaces.

Is the K58 an upgrade over the K46?

Yes, in strength: steel gears, 1-inch axles and about 25% more axle torque. It isn't a bolt-in swap for a K46 tractor, though. Order the K58 only for machines built with one.

What oil does a K58 take?

Tuff Torq recommends its Tuff Tech hydrostatic drive fluid (187Q0899000, 3 L). Never use ATF. If your machine's manual names a different oil, follow the manual.

Where do I find the Tuff Torq part number?

On the ID label on the transaxle case, usually on top or on the side near the input pulley. It shows the model (for example K57R) and an 11-digit part number (for example 7A646084020). Our part number guide shows where to look on each series.
